E! 1440 FACTORY is an umbrella in the European Research Initiative EUREKA. EUREKA was founded in 1985 to strengthen the global competitiveness of European industry by promoting Europe-wide co-operative R&D. 37 European countries and the European Union are now members. Each EUREKA project involves partners from at least two Member Countries and aims to develop advanced civilian products, processes or services for the worlds market. A EUREKA umbrella basically aims at creating EUREKA R&D projects in a certain technological field: In the case of FACTORY the theme is the future development of production. The subject involves the integrated domain of technology (including advanced information technologies), human resources, management and organisation in order to respond to market needs as well as social and environmental concerns. Until now a number of projects have been generated. In FACTORY a number of representatives from European governments of EUREKA member countries joined to promote trans-boundary efforts on technological research and development in the field of production.
